4 Steps For Cleaning And Caring For Granite

So you think your special because you just got this brand spankin’ new granite countertop? Okay, well you are but you better know how to take care of it or you won’t feel special for very long.  Granite can be particularly hard to clean but it is manageable with the following 4 simple steps.

1. When you have a new granite countertop you  MUST use a solvent-based sealer called an “impregnator”.  This is NOT stain-proof rather it gives you a longer opportunity to clean up any spills or messes before the stain seeps into the granite and becomes permanent.  This should be done as needed or at least once a year.

2.  Do not use acidic based cleaning products such as vinegar based window cleaners, lemons, or limes as this will deteriorate your granite.  I have heard people talk about using steel wool or abrasive brushes to clean it – terrible idea.

3. Rinse a sponge with warm water and wipe down the countertop to clean up a mess.  If you need to use dish soap use it sparingly as it can dull your granite over time. I understand you want to have a countertop disinfected so feel free to use a bit of dish soap but after you used it try to wipe off all traces with a wet rag to avoid leaving any dish soap on the granite.

4. I assume (even though I shouldn’t) that if you are smart enough to have granite countertops you should be smart enough to take care of them. Stop crying about the commitment, just do the routine cleaning/sealing and they will be sure to last you a very long time.
