What is Marble?

Now if you are here to read about how to pick a good steak based on its’ fat marbling  or the game that you played as a chiled with marbles, jax and a circle you are definitely in the wrong place.  We are talking about your marble stones and how they were formed! (get your head out of the gutter!)

Marble is a beautiful stone that has been used for hundreds of years by nearly every culture that has had access to it, the Greeks and the Romans loved this stuff!

I’m gonna get a little technical with terms but stick with me here I’ll make it as clear as possible! Marble is a non-foliated, metamorphic rock composed of recrystallized carbonate materials which are most commonly calite or dolmite. Marble is a result of the metamorphism of sedimentary carbonate rocks like limestone and dolmite rock.

Metamorphism causes the original carbonite material grains to recrystallize  and in the end results in an interlocking mosaic of these crystals.  Basically two rocks are smashed together by mother earth’s naturally moving plates and so much pressure and heat is generated that the rocks interlock  and fuse together.  When this happens it causes swirls and veins of many different colors that are determined by the various material impurities such as clay, silt, sand, iron oxides, etc.

There is a huge market and demand for marble all around the world and according to the United States Geological Survey, marble production in 2006 alone was 46,000 tons valued at $18.1 million. That’s a lot of green!  Pakistan is  one of the largest marble exporters of the world producing more than 100,000 tons of marble exports per year.  On the other end of the spectrum, China is the chief importer of marble, specifically Pakistani marble, by importing amounts of more than 70,000 tons a year.
